Empowered Choices on Your Recovery Path

16 August, 2024Articles, News

One of the most beneficial outcomes about recovery is an increased ability in making better decisions.

Addiction affects the mind and strips an addict the mental capacity in choosing positively.

Whether Addiction has to do with substance use or acting out disruptive behaviour, overall, it is behaviours that involves traits which are the direct opposite of sound decisions making in character.

Usually and most frequently if not all the time the individual who is affected by addiction, is plagued by an overwhelming obsessive urge to use drugs.

One fact is that drugs affect the mind so profoundly yet the addict obsessive nature finds the idea of drug use incredibly appealing that they will act out of compulsive, even with the full knowledge of the effects drugs have on their health, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually but not even the thought of such dangers has power for one to abstain from drug use, especially without a proven program of recovery that makes abstinence possible.

On the other hand, the risky behaviours that an addict may be plagued to commit to fund their drug use, such as crime- eg- stealing, committing fraud, lying, cheating, conning, and manipulating. etc, etc.

Now these actions not only cause a great deal of harm and damage, especially to one on the receiving end but also have consequences that are hard to live with, now at this point an addict would be expected to stop such behaviours because of the consequences one will face for exhibiting such unjust behaviours “but no! not the addict,” for someone with an obsession to use drugs. The addict will do whatever it takes and go through any Lengths just to get their hands on the next fix regardless of the consequences or punishments possible due to impulsive behaviour for -eg- an addict might not have the patience to earn money honestly and resort to crime, even with a full awareness of its results, but when the insane obsession to use urges him/her big chance he/she will rationalize impulsive behaviours just so they can use drug’s.

Recovery deals with addiction and not just addiction but all areas which addiction is likely to affect.

Recovery work such as a twelve steps program, and other programs focus more on the behaviours that contribute to addiction, and it helps change the belief system which then makes it possible for the obsession that permits drug use to be lifted and completely removed so one can make better decisions.

First recovery makes awareness about addiction and its accompanying harmful behaviours exposed and its negative effects.

One starts to really see their addiction practices and its harmful effects on another level and remorse suddenly emerges and one can begin to be accountable and suddenly have the drive to take responsibility, because the motivation to change has become apparent.

Addiction is a temporary escape of reality but always followed by more harsh realities an addict must face so the addict will do, whatever it takes to escape reality for ease and comfort- studies have also proven that is where addiction and its senseless patterns are formed.

Recovery plays a profound role in influencing change of behaviour, believe and practices.

Recovery is the opposite of addiction, if addiction is Isolation- then recovery is connection- addiction is leading a dishonest, selfish, and inconsiderate life- then recovery is living an honest, self-less, considerate lifestyle.

Recovery encourages love, humility, and tolerance and these are among the many practices that are more likely to help form a change in the personality of an addict and with that kind of change making choices based on informed decisions becomes an ideal way of living.

Making informed decisions takes sacrifice and practice.

Such example is going to a recovery meeting even when one does not feel like it, but does so regardless of feelings because being in a recovery meeting one is likely not to act out addict behaviour and the individual will have a day clean and sane from acting addict harmful and insane behaviour.

Addiction thrives on harmful behaviours.

Recovery practices principled behaviour’s which are a result of spiritual growth and that is the benefit of better decisions making, it is an awakening to one being accountable and responsible to recovery and life in general and making informed decisions.
