Can holistic therapies compliment traditional addiction treatment?

15 December, 2023Articles, News

Embarking on the journey of addiction recovery often requires a multifaceted approach that addresses not only the physical aspects of substance use but also the intricate tapestry of mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While traditional addiction treatments, such as counselling and medication, have proven efficacy, the integration of holistic therapies offers a complementary avenue for comprehensive healing.

Holistic therapies center around the idea that individuals should be treated as whole beings, considering their physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. These therapies aim to promote balance and harmony within the individual, addressing not only the symptoms of addiction but also the underlying factors contributing to the substance misuse.

Holistic Therapies: Mind-Body Connection

Holistic therapies, such as mindfulness meditation and yoga, emphasise the connection between the mind and body. These practices encourage individuals to develop self-awareness, manage stress, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. When combined with traditional addiction treatment, they provide valuable tools for coping with cravings and enhancing overall well-being

Stress Reduction:

Addiction and stress often go hand in hand. Holistic approaches like acupuncture, massage therapy, and biofeedback can be effective in reducing stress levels. By incorporating these therapies into the treatment plan, individuals are better equipped to manage stressors that may trigger relapse, thus enhancing the resilience of the recovery process.

Emotional Expression and Processing:

Art therapy and music therapy provide outlets for creative expression, allowing individuals to explore and communicate their emotions. This can be particularly beneficial in addiction treatment, as it helps individuals understand and process underlying emotional issues that may contribute to substance use.

Nutritional Support:

Holistic nutrition addresses the importance of a balanced diet in supporting physical health. Nutritional therapy can play a role in restoring the body’s systems affected by substance abuse, contributing to overall recovery and well-being.

Spiritual Exploration:

Engaging in spiritual practices or exploring one’s sense of purpose can be a powerful aspect of holistic addiction treatment. This dimension addresses the individual’s spiritual needs, providing a foundation for a meaningful and fulfilling life beyond addiction.

It’s important to remember that holistic therapies are not a replacement for traditional treatment. They should be used in conjunction with evidence-based approaches like detox and therapy. However, when integrated effectively, they can provide significant benefits for individuals in recovery:

  • Reduced Relapse Rates: Studies have shown that holistic therapies can improve long-term recovery outcomes and decrease relapse rates.
  • Increased Motivation and Engagement: Individuals may feel more empowered and engaged in their recovery journey when they have a wider range of tools to manage their addiction.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Holistic therapies promote overall well-being, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life beyond addiction.

With so many options available, navigating the world of holistic therapies can be overwhelming. It’s crucial to find practices that resonate with individual needs and preferences. Working with a qualified therapist or counsellor can help individuals explore different options and build a personalised plan for holistic recovery.

Remember, addiction recovery is a journey, not a destination. Holistic therapies can be a valuable companion on this path, offering tools for healing, self-discovery, and lasting well-being. So, if you’re looking for ways to support your recovery or that of someone you love, don’t hesitate to explore the world of holistic therapies. You might just find the missing piece you’ve been searching for.

Inpatient Rehabilitation – what are the benefits ?

06 August, 2021Articles, News

There are many reasons why one would choose to stop addictive behaviours and seek help from a professional, but that begs the question, what type of help is appropriate for me or my loved one, what are the advantages of each and what may I expect? In this article we will go over the benefits of choosing formal, inpatient rehabilitation.

One of the benefits is of choosing to enter a rehabilitation centre is payment and cost. When looking at the financials, it can seem like a costly endeavour but what many people fail to realise is that even hospital plans assign specific benefits for inpatient detox and rehabilitation from addiction. These benefits are available even if there are none allocated for individual counselling or psychological services. This makes rehabilitation more accessible than people may think it is.

Another benefit of inpatient rehabilitation is that is it medically supervised. This is not possible when attempting to detox at home or as an outpatient. A client’s full using history is considered and medication is prescribed to mitigate any possible withdrawal symptoms and negative health consequences as a result of withdrawal. Medication is prescribed by a medical doctor, and administration and compliance to this protocol is supervised by a registered nurse. Mismanagement of medication ceases to be a concern. Supervision ensures that if there are any negative health consequences they are dealt with swiftly and appropriately.

Upon admission to a rehabilitation centre, a client is put in a safe environment, protected from the temptations, triggers and dangers of the outside world . The absence of these temptations means clients experience less frequent cravings, and are prevented from acting out on their cravings when they occur. This is highly beneficial as it reduces the stress in early recovery, giving the client a real opportunity to focus on the work that needs to be done.

Once ensconced in a rehabilitation centre, the client is isolated from the outside world. Though this is a drawback for some, it is one of the key benefits of rehabilitation as it allows the client to focus intensely on the task at hand – which is recovery from addiction. This singleness of purpose, allows for more in-depth recovery work to be done in the time allocated, as opposed to spreading oneself thin between work, family and social commitments, studies or anything else that may prove distracting. 28 days of inpatient rehabilitation includes a lot more work towards long-term recovery than the equivalent time in an outpatient or informal recovery environment.

What many people realise once they start the recovery process is that there is a lot more that needs attention, and that the use of drugs and alcohol are merely symptomatic of a larger problem. Beyond that, being in a treatment environment allows clients to work on a multitude of issues extending all the way back to childhood.

Ceasing to use drugs or alcohol is not the end of a recovery process, but the start of one. Learning to live a life without drugs is just as important as giving up those drugs in the first place.

If you or a loved one need assistance with addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it is a phone call away. Rehabilitation Centres In Pretoria

11 June, 2021Articles, News

Crossroads Recovery Centre prides itself as being the longest running licensed, 12-step rehabilitation centre in Pretoria. Our vision, focus and aim are on helping individuals suffering from addiction into recovery. Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterised by compulsive drug-seeking and use despite adverse effects. At Crossroads rehabilitation centres we recognise that addiction includes, but is not limited to, drugs and alcohol. Our intake of clients seeking help from addiction includes behaviours such as gambling and sex addiction

Crossroads recognises that the treatment of, and recovery from addiction cannot be limited to the individual only. The seat of addiction, as a brain disorder, may reside in the individual, but recovery from addiction includes the systems from which our clients originate. As such, as part of our drug rehabilitation programme, Crossroads Recovery Centres’ treatment includes family education, family workshops, and family therapy. The family is acknowledged as being influential in the recovery from addiction.

Our treatment facility offers a community environment for rehabilitation where clients are guided into the tasks and responsibilities of daily living which have been negatively impacted by their drug use or behaviours. Our rehabilitation programme offers an intense, consistent, structured daily routine including individual counselling sessions, group work, individual introspection with guidance and therapeutic interventions from the counsellors. Our programme is not designed to provide a break for the suffering addict from the realities of life and addiction. Instead it is designed to start the journey back into a life free from drugs, alcohol and other harmful behaviours.

Recovery from long term drug abuse and from addiction may require more than just a short-term stay in a drug rehabilitation centre. Crossroads thus works with a network of halfway houses, sobriety houses and crisis centres in the Pretoria region so as to ensure the best possible start to recovery from addiction for our clients.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one, but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centres provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope, and it’s only a phone call away. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, contact us for a free assessment.

Anxious About Going to a Rehabilitation Centre ?

31 March, 2021Articles, News

Entering a rehabilitation centre is a daunting prospect for any person. People are usually unsure what to expect and this uncertainty may cause a lot of anxiety and stress. This blog aims to alleviate some of that stress.

Potential clients are often concerned about what types of people they may encounter in a rehabilitation centre. Addiction and alcoholism do not discriminate, and as such the variety of people you may see in a rehabilitation centre are different and varied. Senior citizens are admitted alongside high school students. Some people may take longer to realise they have a problem, or may take longer to reach a point where they are ready to accept help. One thing to note, Crossroads
Recovery Centre, like many rehabilitation centres, can only admit clients over the age of 18. If you are seeking help for a minor, our team can help refer you to an appropriate rehabilitation centre. Many rehabilitation centres are co-ed, though men usually make up more of the population. Research suggests that men are more likely to develop substance use disorder and that this is the reason for the lopsided population, although there are many socio-economic factors to consider as well as to why more men seek treatment than women. Men and women receive treatment in the same groups and in much the same manner, but most rehabilitation centres do offer therapeutic groups and interventions that are gender-specific, though this does not make up the majority of therapeutic activities.

As mental health care has become more accessible to a wider variety of people within the South African context, the cultural diversity with rehabilitation centres has shifted to represent a spectrum of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. Addiction does not discriminate, and as such neither do the rehabilitation. In a rehabilitation centre, people from wildly different backgrounds can be seen working alongside each other solving their common problem, the unification under a common cause is truly beautiful to see.

Lastly, we want to address what bring people to treatment centres, we have established that there is a wide range of people in rehabilitation centres, and their reasons for admittance are just as varied. At Crossroads Recovery Centre, we treat alcoholism, drug addiction, food addiction, gambling addiction, sex, and porn addiction. In terms of drugs, many rehabilitation centres will see a spectrum of clients with addictions as diverse as there are drugs. Though there are trends as to which drugs are more widely abused at any given time, there is never just “one type of addict”. Many people have the fear that when they arrive at a rehabilitation centre that they will be alone, that they will be the only person there who is like them. That no one else will understand or be able to empathise with them. This is both correct, and incorrect. No two people in any rehabilitation centre are completely alike, and no two people have zero in common. Though the details may differ there is common ground to be found between all people seeking freedom from addiction. Don’t let the differences intimidate you. Embrace them as an avenue to learn more about yourself and the world around you.

If you or a loved one need rehabilitation from addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it’s just a phone call away. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, please contact us for a free assessment.
