Rehabilitation options in Johannesburg

15 September, 2021Articles, News

When searching for a rehabilitation centre for yourself or a loved one it can be daunting from the start. The terminology, the variety of options, the medical jargon can be intimidating and difficult to navigate. In this article we will break down the rehab options that are available in Johannesburg.

The first important distinction is to choose between inpatient or outpatient treatment, these are the most common options for rehabilitation treatment. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, deciding what is right for you is completely dependent on your personal needs and circumstances, there is no one size fits all.
Inpatient treatment is completed while staying at a rehabilitation centre. All activities take on the premises and clients are constantly supervised. While in inpatient treatment clients are isolated from the outside world, with no need to work, study or fulfil other obligations.
Whilst in inpatient treatment a client’s sole responsibility is to focus on their recovery. Clients who choose this treatment option typically receive more intense therapeutic intervention than those who choose the other rehabilitation options. Clients are consistently supervised, limiting their access to drugs or alcohol, this gives them some safety and security withing the first few weeks of their sobriety. As far as rehabilitation options go, inpatient is the gold standard. Many people are intimidated by this option because it is the most time consuming and expensive option there is, but the quality and level of care received is far superior to the other options. With regards to the fees regarding this form of treatment, it is important to remember that this option is covered by medical aids as a prescribed minimum benefit, this means that even the most basic hospital plan allocates benefits for this type of rehabilitation.

The other most popular option for rehabilitation is outpatient treatment, this type of treatment takes on a variety of forms. When it comes to rehabilitation the most popular form of outpatient treatment is a schedule that runs over the course of a few weeks, and usually consists of group therapy as well as individual counselling. Every outpatient program runs slightly differently, having different time requirement and schedules. Most programs that fall within this category have the big advantage of participants being able to still perform their daily responsibilities, such as work, studies and family commitments. Outpatient does however have its disadvantages as an option for rehabilitation. Because clients are not isolated from the temptations of the outside world while their recovery is still fragile,
many clients report struggling with craving and giving into the temptation of their previous lives. If this option seems right for you, it may be wise to consider that this option is more challenging for clients, as recovery is not their single priority and that because less hours are
dedicated to it the work that is done in this time is less substantial.

There is however a third option, many clients choose to first undertake inpatient rehabilitation and once having completed that program, transfer to an outpatient program. This allows the benefits of both, as well as a smoother integration into their previous lifestyle, while still being supported and held accountable.

Crossroads Recovery Centre in Johannesburg offers both options for rehabilitation. Contact us for advice on how to best proceed with your recovery. What Does A Recovery Programme Entail?

10 September, 2021Articles, News

When an individual is looking for help with their addiction, they usually seek out a recovery centre that offers a recovery programme suited to an individuals needs. A recovery programme usually starts off with a screening process followed by an assessment. Screening is the process by which the counsellor, the client review the current situation, symptoms, and other available information to determine the most appropriate course of action, given the client’s needs and characteristics and available resources within the community. Treatment centres may make use of the Jellinek Curve as an assessment tool to help members of the community understand addiction when they come for an assessment for themselves or their loved ones. The Jelinek Curve is a chart that describes the typical phases of alcoholism and recovery. Immediately, upon admission, where necessary, clients enter into a detox programme. Clients are given a medical detox programme under the supervision of the consulting physician. This can be anything from 3 to 7 days depending on the history of the patient. They are then declared medically fit to enter the programme once the physical side effects have subsided, they begin a process of understanding the mental side of what has led to their addiction in the first place.

Crossroads Recovery Centre is a 12-step treatment facility that believes in a complete individual treatment programme for each client. Clients are guided through their programmes by an addiction counsellor. Treatment planning should be part of a client’s recovery programme as a collaborative process in which professionals and the client develop a written document that identifies important treatment goals and describes measurable, time-sensitive steps towards achieving those goals.

At a minimum an individualized treatment plan addresses the identified substance use disorder(s), as well as issues related to treatment progress- including relationships with family and significant others, potential psychiatric conditions, employment, education, spirituality, health concerns, as well as social and legal needs.

Upon exit, clients are assisted with the reintegration into society which is sometimes done with the assistance of secondary care. Whilst in care, clients are introduced to the Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous fellowships. Crossroads offers a 28-day treatment programme or an 84-day programme. Our programme is based on the Minnesota Model of addictions treatment. This approach is typically characterized by a thorough and ongoing assessment of all aspects of a client as well as multi-modal therapeutic approaches, including group and individual therapy, family education and support and other methods. A multidisciplinary team of professionals’ plan and assist in the treatment process for each client, tailoring it to their needs.

Specific treatment programmes include welcome groups, didactic groups, recovery coaching, occupational therapy, AA meetings, NA meetings, topic groups, spirituality, resident house meetings and goal-setting. Individual counselling is part of the process. This includes one-on-one therapy, addiction counselling, spiritual counselling, step-work counselling, trauma therapy, family counselling and co-dependence counselling.

Most treatment programmes make use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is very relevant for addiction treatment because it is behaviourally based, and most addicts need a practical approach to dealing with their use. The core element of any personal behaviour change is based on the relationship between the client and either the personal counsellor or the approach of the treatment centre.

Treatment facilities focus on both long-term and short-term clients. Usually, clients will come through the centre with short-term stays in mind, due to finances. Long-term treatment is usually suggested as this will give clients the best possible chance of recovering from their addiction going forward.

What is Tik?

08 September, 2021Articles, News

Tik is a highly addictive psychostimulant that is commonly used as a party drug, but because of its fast-acting, highly addictive nature, many people are finding themselves addicted to it. Tik is the street name for crystal methamphetamine. It is also known as ice, glass or meth. It resembles shiny rocks or crystals with a glass-like appearance. Over recent years there has been a sharp increase in its use resulting in many people becoming addicted to the drug. Tik is most commonly smoked using a glass pipe, it can be ingested, snorted or injected.

Tik has been around for a long time, it is a man-made stimulant that was given to soldiers during WW2 to keep them awake and alert. It has been used for weight loss and to ease depression, but currently there is no legal use for the drug. Crystal methamphetamine/tik produces a euphoric rush, it also creates a feeling of confidence and increased energy. Tik causes dopamine to flood the pleasure/reward centre of the brain. Users of the drug once hooked, chase the rush they felt in the beginning. Continued use also builds tolerance in the user which means they need to start taking more of the drug to get the same high.

Some of the signs of tik use are:

  • Obsessively picking at hair or skin.
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss.
  • Dilated pupils and red eyes.
  • Strange sleeping patterns — staying up for days or even weeks at a time.
  • Jerky, erratic movements; twitching; facial tics; animated or exaggerated mannerisms; and constant talking.
  • Borrowing money often, selling possessions, or stealing.
  • Angry outbursts or mood swings.
  • Psychotic behavior, such as paranoia and hallucinations.

There are serious consequences from using tik, and the long-term effects can be devastating. Someone who wants to come off crystal methamphetamine must seek professional help. The withdrawal from tik is psychological and the craving and need to use can be overwhelming.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction to tik – know that help is readily available. We have an experienced team which includes medical staff to assist with safe medical detox where necessary. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. What do rehabilitation centres do?

18 August, 2021Articles, News

The purpose of rehabilitation centres is to restore some or all of the patient’s physical, sensory, and mental capabilities that were lost due to injury, illness, or disease.

This process helps individuals regain the ability to live and work normally after suffering from a disabling illness or injury. It involves helping them overcome their limitations and regain the skills needed to live independently.

A rehabilitation programme can help patients improve their quality of life by addressing their disabling conditions including addiction which is a disease. It can also reverse their conditions or help them cope with their deficits.

Rehabilitation programmes are designed to meet the individual needs of patients. They can include a variety of therapies and are often customized to fit the patient’s needs and may also include family therapy.

There are many different types of rehabilitation services provided in different settings. Some of these include hospitals, skilled care facilities, sports medicine clinics or addiction rehabilitation centres. Rehabilitation centres offer group sessions, during those group sessions, the goal is to discuss the various components of treatment, including the 12-step programmes, relapse prevention, and recovery.

These daily meetings in rehabilitation centres, in the safety of controlled therapeutic environments, help you to begin to recognize patterns of behaviour you can change or certain triggers to avoid post-treatment. Rehabilitation centres play vital roles in helping patients rediscover themselves. It is very important for patients and their families to consider a rehabilitation centre as a place to begin a new step in life

Part of the treatment and recovery process focuses on developing new, healthy habits that are intended to become routine in post-discharge life. Rehabilitation facilities aid patients to make positive changes in their lives by rectifying maladaptive behaviours. Patients learn healthy coping skills, impulse control, emotional regulation skills, and drug-refusal strategies that can assist them in avoiding relapsing in the long run.

We understand the seriousness of addiction at Crossroads Recovery Centre. We offer treatment options that range from detoxification to an intense, inpatient psychotherapeutic programme that carefully addresses the symptoms and causes of addiction. We have the help you need to get better. We have the guidance you need to live a healthy, sober lifestyle. Most of all we want to see you flourish.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one, but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centres provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope, and it’s only a phone call away.
