Treatment of drug addiction at a drug rehab

24 November, 2021Articles, News

Drug rehabilitation is a process of treatment that aims to help people overcome their dependence on psychoactive substances, such as alcohol and cocaine.

There are various types of programmes in terms of rehabilitation from addiction. These include residential treatment centres (inpatient or outpatient), local support groups, extended care centres, sober houses, addiction counselling, mental health, and medical care. Some drug rehab centres offer age and gender specific programmes as well.

According to NACADA – drug rehabilitation programmes should not be administered to any client prior to an assessment which entails a brief history of the client, the substance used, any past treatment, risk potential for instances of suicidal attempts as well as a mental status examination (MSE). This forms the baseline needed to develope an appropriate treatment plan to address the actual problems of the client.

An effective drug rehab treatment programme addresses the multiple needs of the patient rather than treating addiction by itself. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that medically assisted drug detoxification or alcohol detoxification alone is ineffective as a treatment for addiction. It is an important part of the process, however, it is exactly that – a part of a therapeutic process. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recommends detoxification using medications (where applicable) and behavioural therapy, followed by relapse prevention. According to NIDA, effective treatment must address medical and mental health services as well as follow-up options, such as community or family-
based recovery support systems. Whatever the methodology, patient motivation is an important factor in treatment process.

For individuals addicted to prescription drugs, treatments tend to be similar to those who are addicted to “street” drugs. Medication such as methadone and buprenorphine can be used to treat addiction to prescription opiates, whereas behavioural therapies are used to treat addiction to prescription stimulants such as benzodiazepines, and other drugs.

Types of behavioral therapy include:

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy, which seeks to help patients to recognize, avoid and cope with situations in which they are most likely to relapse.
  • Multidimensional family therapy, which is designed to support the recovery of the patient by improving family functioning.
  • Motivational interviewing, which is designed to increase patient motivation to change their behaviour and to enter treatment.
  • Motivational incentives, which use positive reinforcement to encourage abstinence from the addictive substance.

Treatment can be a long process and the duration is dependent upon the patient’s needs and history of substance use. It been has shown that most patients benefit from at least three months of treatment and longer durations are associated with better outcomes. Prescription drug addiction doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life and can be a devastatingly, destructive force.

Rehabilitation Centre in Johannesburg

05 November, 2021Articles, News

Addiction rehabilitation is a process that begins with abstinence and requires deep mental, emotional and spiritual change. For addicts, entering a rehabilitation centre may be a daunting proposition but for thousands of people who go on to lead successful lives after active addiction, it is the beginning of a long-term solution. There are a number of rehabilitation centres for addiction in Johannesburg. Some addicts turn to religion for the answer while others turn to psychiatry and alternative medicine for help. At Crossroads Recovery Centre, we believe that the most effective option is a combination of a number of therapeutic techniques and the integration of 12-step recovery.

The initial, physical part of getting clean and staying abstinent from drugs and alcohol, is often the hardest part. Depending on the type of substance that is being abused and the extent to which it is being used, every patient experiences detox differently. Some addicts and alcoholics experience extreme physical withdrawals while others struggle with what may feel like an intense mental battle. In every case, choosing an addiction rehabilitation centre in Johannesburg that has an extensive medical detox programme is key.

In most cases, patients will be assigned to a specific counsellor who will provide guidance and therapeutic treatment on an individual level. When choosing a rehab, it may be useful to consult with the available counselling team and ask questions that will help to allay your fears and provide much-needed assurance that you are making the right decision. Crossroads, Johannesburg is a small, private facility where clients get a lot of one-on-one time with their counsellors due to the high staff to client ratio.

What happens in a group therapy session? Many addicts want to know the answer to this question before entering rehab, because the prospect may provoke some anxiety within them. Group therapy has proved effective in the treatment of addiction. The solution lies in the effectiveness of one addict helping another. When addicts are able to relate to each other, share their stories and be open about their feelings in an environment that is safe and respectful, real and lasting change can start to occur. For this reason, we recommend that when looking for rehabilitation options for addiction in Johannesburg, you look for a programme that includes professionally facilitated group therapy sessions. You may be surprised at just how effective this method can be.

12-step recovery is one method of arresting the disease of addiction and finding a new way to live. It is the programme used by fellowships such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholic Anonymous. At Crossroads Recovery Centres, we ensure that addicts are introduced to the 12 steps while they are in treatment so that they can become accustomed to incorporating 12-step meetings into their everyday lives, as well as other aspects of the programme including getting a sponsor, doing stepwork and being of service to others. In our experience, integration with the 12 steps is a vital part of effective rehabilitation options for addiction. The addict is introduced to a fellowship of men and women who want nothing more than to help each other recover., and for many, being surrounded by this loving and caring community is indispensable.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with a rehabilitation centre in Johannesburg – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it’s only a phone call away. Get Help from a Trusted Rehab Centre

02 June, 2021Articles, News

There seems to be a stigma attached to the idea of going to rehab. The way that drug and rehab centres are portrayed in the media, certainly does not help in breaking that stigma. And the reality is that if you have not had a direct encounter with someone who has been through the rehabilitation process, the idea of going to a drug and rehab centre for help, may be daunting. In reality, rehabs are places of hope.

For Individuals Struggling with Drug Problems

Getting clean off drugs and alcohol is not a process that can be undertaken on your own. If you have taken the first step towards getting clean by admitting that you have a problem, the next step is to reach out for help. Getting professional help in the form of counselling and addiction treatment is the beginning of an all-important journey towards building the future you deserve.

No one expects anyone with a drug or alcohol problem to recover overnight. Recovery is a process that happens one day at a time – a process that involves both internal and external changes. Those changes take willingness, courage and help from people who understand both the harm that addiction can cause and the joy that recovery can bring.

The professionals who assist addicts at drug and rehab centres, have experience. To put it simply, they have seen it all and many of them have done it all. They understand what addicts and alcoholics go through and how their disease can be arrested before it’s too late. The reality is that if you are still alive and the choice to go to a drug and rehab centre is available to you, you are one of the lucky ones. There is hope for everyone – at any age and at any stage of your journey.

For Family Members, Friends or Concerned Associates

The choice to admit a loved one, friend or colleague to a drug and rehab centre may be a difficult one to make. You may have reservations about whether they will be in good hands and whether the process will produce long-term results. If you have those kinds of reservations, good – it shows that you have deep concern for the addict or alcoholic concerned and that you will most likely want to make an informed decision about what the next step should be.

One of the most important things to understand about the nature of addiction is that it is not a disease that can be arrested in isolation. The best chance any addict or alcoholic has, it to be surrounded by individuals who can relate to their experience – people who have walked the recovery path and who can attest to the fact that life after drugs and alcoholics is worth living. For that deep level of experience, you can turn to the professionals, knowing that you are amongst individuals who consider their jobs to be a way in which they can give back to society and help those in need.

If you or a loved one needs assistance with an addiction – know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one, but getting yourself or your loved one the best possible care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope, and it’s only a phone call away. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, please contact us for a free assessment.

5 Reasons to get help for Substance abuse in Johannesburg

10 February, 2021Articles, News

No one really wants to go to rehab. For many addicts and families, “rehab” is a scary thought. The word itself carries an overwhelming stigma, and the idea of actually going away to rehab can be equally overwhelming. For those battling substance abuse in Johannesburg or elsewhere, going to rehab means leaving the comforts of home, and leaving the familiarity of drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms, in order to get sober. It means asking for help. Most of all, it means change – changing habits, behaviours, maybe even hobbies and groups of friends. These issues can block you off from seeking the appropriate help for you addiction. Here are 5 reasons why you should seek help for substance abuse in Johannesburg, or elsewhere for that matter, regardless of the fears that might be holding you back.

  1. One of the biggest reasons to consider going to rehab is that quitting drugs or alcohol on your own can be extremely dangerous. People who are uneducated about addiction may think all you have to do is decide to quit. But if you have been abusing drugs or alcohol for any length of time, it’s not that simple. Once you are physically addicted, withdrawal from alcohol and certain drugs is extremely unpleasant and may even cause a medical emergency. Rehabilitation centres such as Crossroads have a medical team that ensure safe and comfortable detox.

2. A professional rehab program isn’t just about getting clean and sober – it’s about learning how to live without drugs and alcohol. You will learn how to cope with difficult situations and maintain abstinence. You will learn how to set goals for yourself, and reach them. You will learn how to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle, and to make positive changes in your life. You will also learn who you are without drugs and alcohol, and learn to be comfortable with yourself.

3. At Crossroads Recovery Centre your treatment plan is designed to help you get better, and part of that includes developing healthy habits for your overall well-being. Adding structure to your life, such as set times for eating, sleeping, and recreation, will help you leave the habits of your addiction in the past. Rehab is a safe, stable, and supportive environment with the sole purpose of helping people get better.

4. Going to rehab should always be for personal growth, but there is another benefit, it helps those in recovery rebuild burned bridges, and re-establish relationships that their addiction had torn apart. During your drug-using days, you may have lied to your loved ones, taken money from your parents, or hurt someone very close to you. While these wounds take time to heal, a drug treatment program can give you a clearer perspective on the detriment your addiction once caused. You can then address those in your life that you hurt, and start to rebuild their trust. Family support and counseling is an integral part of the treatment process.

5. As much as you feel like you are the only one going through this right now, you are not alone, and in a rehab program, you find others walking in similar shoes, on the road to recovery. Rehab is a collaborative effort between not just you and the treatment team, but also you and your fellow housemates. There will be many chances to meet other people who are working through similar challenges, whether it’s in group therapy, on organized activities, or during 12 step meetings. These social connections can be a great source of encouragement and support both during and after rehab.

If you or a loved one are battling an addiction and are in search of rehabilitation from substance abuse in Johannesburg- know that help is readily available. The road to recovery is not always an easy one but getting yourself or your loved one the best care from the team at Crossroads Recovery Centre, Johannesburg, provides you with a map to sober, healthy living. No matter how bad things seem, there is hope and it’s just a phone call away. If you or anyone close to you needs help with an addiction to sex, gambling, substances, alcohol or food, please contact us for a free assessment.
