Can Family Members participate in the Recovery Process at Crossroads?

Intervening in a crisis situation

At Crossroads Recovery Centres we have qualified and trained addictions specialist who support families in the process of staging an intervention for their loved one who struggles with addiction.

  • Finding treatment options and helping them get into treatment.

Crossroads Recovery Centres offers a safe and obligation free assessment with one of our qualified addiction councillors, to the family member who struggles with addiction.

  • At Crossroads Recovery Centres, our families are welcomed, within 7 days of admission to attend a family information session in which the families are given an opportunity to provide necessary information about their life, and substance abuse of the family member that will help the treatment professionals at Crossroads Recovery Centres provide the right type of care.
  •  Families are often voiceless when it comes to the disease of addiction. At Crossroads Recovery Centre family members are given an opportunity to write family letters, which allows them to openly share their experience of their loved one abusing substance. This process is found to be very therapeutic and empowers the family members a great deal.
  • At Crossroads Recovery Centres the families of our clients are encouraged to visit their loved ones on a Sunday during our family visiting hours, as it is important for both the family member and the addict to rebuild relationships. Families are once again encouraged to participate in the recovery process by providing the councillors with feedback on their experience with their loved ones and any concerns they might have.
  • We at Crossroads Recovery Centre offer a bi weekly family support group, where the families are able to hear shares from previous clients and their families, as well as raise any questions they might have. The families are also introduced to groups such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon, two of the most prominent support groups for families of addicts. Al-Anon is for families of alcoholics. On the other hand, Nar-Anon is for families dealing with drug addicts. Both groups are structured based on the 12-step program.
  • Healthy family roles and behaviors include holding the loved one accountable for their behavior and that is why, at Crossroads we offer a family exit meeting on completion of the client’s treatment, in which they share with their families what their on-going recovery process will entail once they are home.

It is unfortunate that addiction is not a spectator sport and everybody gets to play: at Crossroads Recovery Centre we believe the same should apply to the recovery process.

Government rehabilitation options

10 January, 2025Articles, News

Government has intensified its efforts to combat substance and alcohol abuse through intervention programs in all provinces.

There are Provincial Substance Abuse Forums and Local Drug Action Committees at municipalities to enhance existing community initiatives with knowledge and skills to manage their own prevention work at grassroots level.

The committees are supported by the Central Drug Authority (CDA), which is a government body that consists of experts in medicine, law enforcement and community mobilisation.

The Department of Social Development has rehabilitation centers that are equipped with qualified professionals and resources that help alcohol and substance abuse addicts to recover and provide families much needed support.

Voluntary admission

• Walk-in service: Individuals can arrive at a DSD or a DSD-accredited NPO office without prior appointments.
Staff will then assist and explain the admission process to them. Many individuals seeking help are walk-ins motivated to start treatment. Acting on this motivation is crucial because it could fluctuate over time, so it is better not to waste time and get help.

• Initial screening: Upon arrival, a screening assesses whether the individual is experiencing a substance use disorder (SUD).

• A social worker will do a thorough psychosocial evaluation to determine the appropriate intervention. It could include brief intervention, inpatient treatment, outpatient care and community-based services.

• A medical officer at a primary healthcare facility will complete a medical screening report.

• Placement is arranged at a state-owned or funded inpatient treatment facility. Individuals could be referred to outpatient services, community-based programmes or day clinics in the area if deemed suitable.

• Admission to inpatient treatment facilities must be done by a social worker. Walk-ins are not allowed directly at these centres. While awaiting admission, individuals can participate in preparatory group sessions.

Accessibility and Affordability

A significant difference between government and private rehabs lies in their affordability. Government rehabs receive government funding, allowing them to offer treatment at a lower cost or even for free. These rehabs are aimed at assisting people who have financial challenges, often as a result of their substance abuse.

Unfortunately, in South Africa, the number of government rehabs is limited, leading to lengthy waiting lists and delayed admission. Private rehabs have stepped in to fill this gap, providing immediate assistance with shorter admission processes and minimal waiting times. This rapid response is a game-changer for those grappling with addiction, ensuring help is available precisely when it’s needed most.

Treatment Approaches – Private Rehabs vs Government Rehabs

Government and private rehabs offer a range of treatments, but differences exist in the types of therapies and programs provided. Government-funded facilities often face limited resources, creating challenges from a staffing and facility perspective. This tends to impact the variety and depth of treatments available.

One of the most compelling advantages of private drug rehabs is the tailored treatment plans they offer. Recognising that no two recovery journeys are the same, private rehabs create personalised programs addressing unique needs, preferences, and challenges. These custom-tailored plans ensure every aspect of treatment, from detoxification to therapy are aligned, increasing the chances of success.

Private rehabs often have more flexibility in their treatment approaches. They offer a wider range of therapeutic techniques. Their team of specialists are available every step of the way – from detox through to post-treatment recovery support. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that a comprehensive care is provided. They look at addiction as well as the underlying causes and co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

Managing Holiday Stress in Recovery with Crossroads

03 January, 2025Articles, News

The holiday season can be a challenging time for anyone in recovery from substance abuse, and managing holiday stress in recovery requires mindful strategies. At Crossroads, a rehabilitation center dedicated to supporting individuals in their journey toward sobriety, clients receive the tools they need to navigate this often-overwhelming time of year.

The holiday season is filled with social events, family gatherings, and heightened expectations, which can create immense pressure for those in recovery. For individuals who are working through a 12-step program, staying grounded and connected with their recovery goals becomes even more crucial.

Take Control of Your Recovery Journey

Crossroads offers both inpatient and outpatient treatment options, allowing clients to receive the level of support that works best for them. Inpatient treatment offers a controlled environment where individuals can focus entirely on their recovery, free from the stressors that often accompany holiday celebrations. The dedicated staff at Crossroads ensures clients are equipped with coping mechanisms and strategies to manage triggers that may arise during the season.

For those in outpatient treatment, staying connected with their support network is key. Crossroads emphasizes the importance of maintaining regular meetings and check-ins, whether in person or virtually, to stay grounded. The 12-Step program, which guides clients through personal reflection and self-discovery, helps individuals remain mindful of their progress and continue to grow emotionally and spiritually during stressful times.

Crossroads also encourages clients to practice self-care by setting boundaries and making thoughtful decisions about social engagements. This may include avoiding high-risk situations where the temptation to use substances may arise. Learning to say no and prioritizing one’s health can be a powerful way to manage holiday stress in recovery.

Ultimately, the holidays don’t have to derail recovery. By using the support and resources provided by Crossroads, individuals can navigate this challenging season while remaining focused on their long-term sobriety goals.

FAQs and Answers
